[Following is a volunteer review of "A Reckoning of Wolves" by Judy Higgins.]
Saudi Arabia has very strict laws that differ from those in other countries. Unfortunately, tourists unaware of these rules can find themselves in danger or worse. That’s what happens to Dr. Victor Lawson when he visits Saudi Arabia at the invitation of a princess he met in the US. What happens to him could happen to any of us.
A Reckoning of Wolves begins when Dr Victor Lawson, a semi-famous doctor, thanks to a CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, is visited by a Saudi Princess, Safiyyah Abyar al Saud. After his consultation, she offered him a unique opportunity. A 30-day all-expense paid visit to Saudi Arabia to consult at one of Riyadh’s premier hospitals.
Having just been dumped by his girlfriend Sandra, Victor feels this is the opportunity he needs to lift himself from his self-imposed funk. And that’s when all his bad luck begins. The princess tricks him into getting involved with a female freedom fighter, Fayza Saraf, under house arrest, who smuggles him a USB drive to take back to the US. Run-ins with customs agents, hitmen, and people who want the drive at no expense follow Victor wherever he goes in the city. What happens to him in Saudi Arabia? Does he make it out alive, and what is the meaning of the wolf charm bracelets that all women wear? You’ll need to read Judy Higgins’ A Reckoning of Wolves to find out.
There was so much to love about this book. For starters, the plot was captivating, based on everyday real-life situations in Saudi Arabia, and kept me page-turning well into the night. Then there are the cast of characters. In the United States, Becky Bubbalo, Victor’s head nurse, is a force to be reckoned with in every scene. In Saudi Arabia, I loved Darpan, who just wanted to be as much help as possible.
I can’t find a single thing to fault about this book. I loved the story and was very satisfied with the ending. I was engaged from cover to cover and just wanted more. I learned so much about Saudi culture, and I am the first to admit that after reading this book, Riyadh isn’t anywhere near the top of my must-visit places. I’m too scared I’d accidentally break one of the many rules.
I’m delighted to award A Reckoning of Wolves5 out of 5 stars. It’s an excellent book, and I want to read more from Judy Higgins. I recommend this book to lovers of action/adventure/thrillers and anyone curious about what goes on in the Middle East. It’s best suited for more mature readers due to the use of swearing, and I need to mention that some scenes, like torture, and descriptions of some of the country’s punishment devices may trigger some people.
