Review of For the Love of Cards
"For the Love of Cards: Ace of Hearts" by Shelly Dickenson is the story of a young woman, Nikkie, who struggles to navigate life as an adult, dealing with financial instability and family drama. She had earned a degree as a massage therapist and was taking a master's in acupuncture, but she faced great difficulty as she had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. While at work, she overheard a conversation about a job vacancy at a casino; they were looking for massage girls, her specialty. After much deliberation, she applies, and her life takes a turnaround as a result of that decision. Will Nikkie be able to handle all that comes with this new job and new environment?
I like the book because of how easy the story flow was. The author opened up the story with a peek into the life of Nikkie, how she struggled financially and the issues she had with her family, and also trying to earn her Master's degree, and how she worked hard through all of that and pulled through, managing to turn her life around for the better.
My favorite character in the book, however, is Jessica, because of how she took Nikkie under her wing, offering her a solid friendship and helping her experience life better. I also liked how she worked hard and made a living out of playing poker and encouraged Nikkie to do the same.
What I didn't like about the book, however, was how Nikkie's family treated her in comparison with her sister. I believe if they did things differently, she wouldn't have had to struggle so much, and she could easily ask them for help. I also didn't like how Nikkie almost got carried away by the glamour of the casino life and it started reflecting in her character, yet she didn't see anything wrong with it and thought she had it under control. The book is perfectly edited.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars, and I give this rating because the story was captivating to read.
I recommend the book to all lovers of fiction and also fans of the poker game, both beginners and professionals.
