Review of Her Millions Are Worthless
Her Millions Are Worthless by Bela Feketekuty follows the romance of Bill and Jane. Bill is a struggling app developer. He is working to create a brilliant new app that will allow him to pay off his debt and give him the financial support he needs to live. Jane is an absurdly rich woman who works as a chemist to develop new pharmaceutical products. Bill desires to date Jane, though he can never get an answer as to where her money comes from. As their relationship develops, Bill begins to worry that Jane's money is dirty. Will Bill discover the truth behind Jane's money? Is he already in too deep?
The premise of the book had me hooked from the start. As a lover of mystery books and romance, I thought this was a fun combination of these genres. The overall plot of the book was my favorite part.
However, the writing style of this book was a letdown. The majority of the book is told through dialogue, and there is a lot of "he said, she said" throughout the book. To me, this kind of writing is hard to connect with. It feels more like reading a report of events than a detailed, engaging novel. While it was easy to follow the plot, and the emotions of the characters were stated, I was not able to feel the emotions on a deeper level or empathize with the characters. Given this book is listed as a romance, I was expecting a great depth of emotion.
In addition, there were scenes and an entire chapter that felt out of place. At one point, Bill and Jane go to watch a movie. One chapter is dedicated to describing the plot of the movie. While the movie is referenced later in the book, I feel as though the lengthy description of it was overwhelming and did not advance the plot. I wish that Feketekuty had simply written a short paragraph to summarize the movie.
I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. I was excited by the general premise of the book. The book was also well-edited. However, the writing style is too hard to look past. I found it almost impossible to connect with the characters, and some scenes felt pointless. I believe that those who enjoy reading books that focus on deception in relationships, along with a little mystery, would enjoy this book best. While it was not a favorite of mine, other readers might be able to enjoy it more.
