The book, The Monkey Idol, by K.D. McNiven, is book 1 in the series Decker & Callie Adventure. It is fiction written in a second person perspective. Being book 1, it is easy to follow the story line and understand the protagonists.
Who killed Leonard and why? To answer this, his friends and wife go on an expedition to trace his footsteps leading up to his death. Leonard had been killed while on an expedition in Honduras to discover the lost city where there were valuable artifacts, one of them being the monkey idol. His wife, Holly, receives a package of a monkey curving from Leonard, a short while after receiving news of his death. Judging by the address on the package, she comes to the conclusion that it came from Honduras. Did Leonard actually stumble upon the lost city? The expedition turns out to be a very dangerous endeavor.
I will admit that this is one of those books you would not want to put down. It is a page turner and also fast paced. It does not drag at all. I enjoyed reading this book and felt like I was part of the team. The adventure is very exciting. I got to experience the terrain and weather of Honduras. The author has taken time to develop both the protagonists and antagonists very well. Their interaction is interesting and leaves one wondering what will follow.
Even though the characters are well developed in this book, I felt that Leonard, who dies at the beginning of the book, did not get the same treatment. Nothing much is mentioned about his character and we do not get to be with him at his time of death to know how he died. I did not like the way the protagonists were very careless when it came to their safety. It made me feel like warning them of impending danger.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has a good plot and is an easy read. The editing of this book is well done except for a few errors. I noticed that Decker Hayden and his wife were erroneously referred to as ‘the Hayden’s.’ The errors are too minor to have an effect on the rating. I have no reason to rate this book lower.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure and those who would like to experience it. This book does not have gory scenes and neither is it sexually explicit. It may be read by all.
