What Matters Most by Helen Bea Kirk

Maegan is a recent widow and is looking to find her stolen family heirlooms. King is a local pawn shop owner trying to decide how to end his relationship with Gayla permanently. Maegan who is staying with her great aunt is determined to find her things while avoiding Andrew, her long distant cousin who is dying to go on a date with her. Her path crosses with King’s as she attempts to rob his shop to regain a pearl necklace. King lets her take them while covering for her when the cops arrive. In doing this, King not only fears future confrontation but also how a clash with his family members who also own pawn shops will go. Is there a way to prevent his family from being hurt and deal with his issues? Can Maegan find all her items without getting caught?

I enjoyed many aspects about What Matters Most, but most importantly I enjoyed its quick pace. Maegan’s character was one of my favorites. She is strong, loyal, and dedicated to finding her family’s stolen items. She is strong in that she has overcome the loss of her first love while also managing to better herself. I find that she is loyal in that as she grows closer to King’s mother in her new position as caretaker, she becomes fiercely protective when others threaten their family. King was also another favorite. I imagined him to be a brute at the start of the novel, but the author revealed a softer side of him as the story progressed and a romance developed between Maegan and himself. He also was a loyal and reliable individual dealing with work, a crazy ex-girlfriend, and his mother’s stroke.

Several themes observed while reading this book were family, loyalty, and determination. A family theme can be seen in Maegan’s focus to locate her stolen family heirlooms and also in King's dedication to his own family. The next theme is observed with King’s loyalty to his family, Maegan’s loyalty to her cause, Andrew’s loyalty to making money, and Gayla’s loyalty to her son. During the story, the most determined person is our main character as it ties into the previously mentioned themes because she is determined to complete her task.

As the story progressed, it was difficult for me to find something I disliked. I did question the beginning at first. I felt that there should have been more detail leading up to the pawn shop robbery rather than starting the story there. I quickly moved past that, and the story continued smoothly. I only discovered three or four circumstances where words were misspelled throughout the novel and did not observe any other errors.

Having such difficulty in finding errors, I feel that this book easily earned a 4 out of 4 stars. It is an easy novel to get lost in with only occasional violence and mentions of nudity. Nothing extremely vulgar was used during this story making it appropriate for anyone interested in a romance, family focused themes, and a fun book.

Seems like an interesting read. Having to steal things that actually belongs to your family is pretty intriguing and would definitely keep you glued to the book. Your description of the characters are great! Thanks for a great review.
