This author intrigues me with his choice of characters - ordinary people just like me. His talent for character development is now a given. I wonder if his having been a surgeon has allowed him to see people "deep inside."

Your review makes this book sound like the novel of the century, examining human nature, guilt, living with life's choices, and apparently a thrilling mystery running through it as well. I have downloaded it and am looking forward to reading it!

I love the start of your review but as I went down I realized it's not a book of my taste

Thanks for a great honest review. A crime story and man trying for redemption. I love A book that gets you emotionally involved, laughing and crying.
Thanks William.

Great review. This book is not one for me tho it seems riddled with human conflict and those situations make the book hard to read and unenjoyable for me. The fact that you went through so many emotions, tells me that the author is an amazing writer that transport you into the story and make you feel what the characters felt.

Thank you for the very comprehensive, and appealing, review. I read the sample last time it was BOTD and really enjoyed the writing style. Your review has motivated me to read the rest. I love well-developed characters and am definitely interested in seeing if McDowell can overcome his unsavoury past.

Love your review! This book sounds like it really makes me think. However, after reading the sample I don't think that this book is for me.

This is a great review! You convinced me to start reading the book when I originally planned to read it tomorrow. This book really seems interesting, I love how the main character was not the usual protagonist "good guy" type.
I'll get back on my reading now.

Having read the sample, I don't think I would be sympathetic to Hiram and his process of redemption. Thanks for the review.

I like Hiram's over ambitious character, almost like he doesn't care who he hurts in the process. Good reviewing.

Thanks for your review! I think I'll have to skip due to the mild sexual nature of the book. The fact that it was possibly for you to empathize with Hiram gives me hope that we can truly love the "unlovable".
