A young girl who is psychic, immigration from Scotland to San Francisco ,an abusive father, a strong mother and coming of age in the Haight Ashbury era sounds good to me. Grabbed my free copy and congrats on being BOTD.

A book revolving around the trials of the MacDonald family, a young Scottish family who immigrates to San Francisco in search of a better life, sounds intriguing. It is good that Gender inequality is all well portrayed in the story, and that the characters evolve throughout the story. I am not fond of books with religious undertones, but I am glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the review!

Nice review. June sounds like an interesting character with a hard road. Being born in a time where gender inequality was the norm and then being psychic in a family of hard wired Catholics with no long term support has to be very difficult. I don’t think that this book is for me but I’m sure it will appeal to many readers. Thanks for sharing.

A historical fiction with religious qualms.. that should be quite interesting to read. The review walks us well through what we might find in the book. It is thoroughly well done, thank you.

I generally enjoy books where someone comes into magical powers unexpectedly. Is there a reason her mother named her untraditionally? Did her mother already know at birth that she was different? It sounds like June is lonely a lot in the book. She seems to have the support of her mother and sisters but not much companionship.

Thank you for a very well written review. I like your candid review very much. I can relate to June's feeling of being different. I like the family bond you sensed in the story. I am not sure the psychic angle appeals to me though, but you have certainly piqued my interest.

Interesting review! While I like fantasy and feminist books, I'm not sure whether the religious and historical elements of this book would appeal to me as much
