A Mingled Yarn is written by Louise Williams. It tells the story of a girl called Liza and her family over thirty years. The story begins with the birth of Liza. Liza's mother, Sally Anne, dies in childbirth. Sally Anne's sister will bring up Liza as her daughter. Sally Anne never told her lover that she was expecting a child, and she parted from him when she discovered the pregnancy. Her best friend knows her secret, but she has promised that she will never reveal the identity of Liza’s father. Liza will yearn to discover her biological father’s identity. The reader will follow the lives of the Walsh family with Liza at the centre of the story. It will be a story filled with love, secrets, tragedy, and hope.

The main character is Liza. The whole story centres around her. Liza was born in tragic circumstances. However, she grows up to be a happy and loving young woman. She is very affectionate towards her family and friends. She is loyal to her friends. Sadly, she does not know who her biological father is, and this can lead to emotional turmoil. Another interesting character is Finn, Liza’s brother. Finn is a difficult child as he does not connect with his family. He is cruel towards Liza, and his behavior creates friction within the family. Liza’s adoptive parents are also important. They are Fiona and Jack, a loving couple with two biological children before adopting Liza. Fiona's parents are very severe, and they find it difficult to show love and affection. Fiona’s father is cold and cannot forgive what he considers bad behavior, such as having a child out of wedlock. Therefore, he will never accept Liza as his granddaughter. Liza’s lovers will also play a part in the story. The most important character will be Michael, a man Liza will love with all her heart. There are many more characters in this family saga. The last one worth mentioning is Clare, Sally Anne’s best friend. She is a character ridden by the guilt of knowing a secret. She cannot decide what to do for the best. Finally, Rouge is the family pet. He will help many characters when they are facing traumatic events in their lives.

The author writes in the third person style. The style flows. The story is well written, and the author keeps the reader interested by adding unexpected twists. The characters are loveable, and it is easy to feel empathy for them. The author develops the characters as the story progresses. There are many themes talked about, such as loss, illness, guilt, love, and hatred. Some themes are sensitive themes to talk about such as incest and suicide. There are some sexual descriptions, and because of some other sensitive themes, I think this book is best suited for a mature audience. I recommend it to readers who enjoy a story about a family saga. Any reader who likes a fictional story will enjoy this book.

I loved this book. I liked the development of the characters. I thought Liza was an admirable character. I liked the way she conducted her life, pursuing the truth about her biological parents. I liked the author’s approach to sensitive themes. The emotions described in the story are felt by us all, as most of us will deal with loss at some time in our lives. The author was very good at describing how the characters found a way of coping with the loss of their loved ones. All the other themes were interesting to read about, despite some of them being of a very delicate nature. It was a true reflection on life.

I did not dislike anything about this book, and I rate it five out of five stars.
