The Maple Seed Helicopter
By Marco Collina

The Maple Seed Helicopter is a novel with three main characters, Marco, George, and Dario, who were left as orphans for many years at a strict monastery in Italy post WW1. The priest and nuns were unkind to the kids, but the trio survived by becoming great friends who were always looking for ways to follow their adventurous spirits and learn about the Lord. They were taught about the evils of war, the importance of prayer, and to always keep the Love of God in their hearts.

The three couldn’t leave the monastery grounds because soldiers were still close to their village. Marco yearned to escape this life filled with emptiness, a lack of love, and a lack of purpose. The trio escapes the orphanage undetected. They end up at a vineyard run by a kind husband and wife who treat them well and with generosity for the first time in their lives. They arranged to provide all the boys needed, and in turn, the boys could offer indispensable help to the aging vineyard owner. The young men felt God provided a place for them by assisting the couple. They were taught that God sees and provides for you in times of need. Marco promises never to forget this.

As the boys age, two of them have dreams of going to America and landing in New York. Marco believed his true destiny was to see the world, so he found a job as a ship laborer. In America, opportunity is available if you are enthusiastic and aim to work hard. The boys are eager to use their God-given talents in the way they choose and to be proud of those accomplishments. Although this means leaving the loving couple, the boys believe, “The worst one can do is not to reach for what you want.” “We are here to make mistakes and wrong choices.” This is the only path in which you can achieve true salvation.

Throughout their lives, important lessons are learned. They realize that life is not always fair and that when you think people are honest, they purposely deceive you. They understand they are here to serve the Lord and be true to themselves. Marco experiences the inner workings of the church. The novel also includes greed, fear, deceptions, malice, grief, hardship, and material wealth.

The author writes an exciting, imaginative, spiritual, page-turning story with characters of depth and vision. Near-perfect editing proves the author took the time to ensure a professional presence. I love the poems interspersed in the story, and the part about the couple taking the boys in is heartening. Mr. Collina’s writing style is superb. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
