Review of The Reel Sisters
Prior to reading The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings, I had no knowledge of fly fishing. However, this beautiful tale gave ample information about it alongside the witty and realistic characters it portrayed. At its core, this novel is a book about five very different women who bond over fly fishing. Each of them comes from a different background, and they are all at different phases in their life. The original fly fisher is Rose, who is a spunky older woman. Sophia runs a greenhouse and seemingly has sworn off love. Veronica is a successful coach for women in business. Amanda is a young teacher whose husband is deployed overseas. The four of them, while on a fishing trip, met Melody, a photographer, after she was swept down the river to them.
The beauty in this novel is the characters. Each is vibrant and has a rich backstory. Their witty banter had me laughing along with them. There are themes of grief, past trauma, and the reality of life woven into their lives that contrast the lighthearted fishing tales. Each woman's past is revealed as the book progresses. Each woman is well-developed and has a clear development.
I thought that another excellent part was seeing how Melody found her niche in the group. She is a woman who was struggling to find her place in the world, and seeing how this group was able to help her grow was amazing to see.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I didn't notice any errors; this book was exceptionally well-edited. I also can not think of a single thing I did not like about this book. Therefore, I can find no reason not to award it full marks.
Readers who are looking for a witty and heartfelt book would enjoy this one. Those who enjoy fly fishing, or wish to know more about it, would also enjoy this tale. There is some strong language, and I believe that it is better suited for adult audiences as they will better relate to the characters. Women may also enjoy this book more than men.
