Review of Teething Problems
Teething Problems is a compelling novel by Mark Fletcher that follows the struggles of a twenty-something protagonist. His already strained relationship with his mother comes under more strain as a memory he has treasured all his life is revealed to be false.
After being confronted with the heartbreaking news that the hero dad he has admired all his life may not be his biological father, the protagonist is confused why this stranger, who keeps being referred to as his dad, would want to enter his life after all this while. The debacle surrounding the whole thing causes him to have a fallout with his mum. Feeling alone, he decides to unburden himself to his girlfriend. However, their date takes an unexpected turn when a seemingly innocent joke on his part sets things in motion that he never wished for.
I really enjoyed the story. The protagonist's behavior, even though juvenile at times, struck me as humorous. I loved his antics. This book highlighted the dangers of miscommunication and how communication is a two-way street. The content of a message is as important as its delivery. A message is only successful if the receiver understands it. Anything apart from this is like noise.
I enjoyed the writing style of the author as he was able to take the readers through the thought process of the protagonist, whose behavior I found to be quite understandable when I saw the character of his mom. She could be as selfish as him when she wants to be. Children often expect their parents to have all the answers and to act in a certain way that conforms to their standard of who a parent should be. This can be a grave error, as parents are also human and entitled to make mistakes. They are also reflections of their experiences growing up.
To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement; it was amazing. It was short but dazzling. My only problem with it is that it had to end. This book has definitely moved up on my list of favorite books. I look forward to seeing more books from the author. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I didn't find any faults with it. The story was well-written, with an intriguing plot, and there were no errors. It deserves this 5-star rating in my opinion. I would recommend it to parents, especially single parents. This book emphasizes the importance of establishing a good link with your kids.
