Review of Teething Problems
Teething Problems by Mark Fletcher is a fiction book. It tells the story of a young man in his early twenties. The readers meet him in a tough spot in his life. He has just found out that his father actually is not his father. He discovered that his mother was lying about who his real father was for years. To learn the burdensome truth about one of the most important people in his life was a toilsome experience. Apart from that, he is forced to face the fact that he was brought into this world as a result of his mother’s affair.
What stands out in this book is the way it is written. The narrator gets his thoughts across through his consciousness. Because of that the readers can really dive into his character. His thoughts are presented on a silver plate, and it can help people to relate to the narrator and to better understand him. At the same time, this procedure makes the readers feel almost as if we were having a heart-to-heart conversation with the young man going through some tough moments in his life. This book put certain aspects of life into perspective and prompts us to wonder whether we would act the same way the main character does.
Even though the book is relatively short, only 91 pages, the author manages to make an impact on the reader. Despite its short length, this book covers some serious and vital issues. Apart from touching upon the subjects of adolescence, growing up, and family problems, it also features a vital theme of forgiveness. The narrator goes through numerous situations that not only can alter his view of the world and life, but leave him reflecting upon whether or not he should forgive. That forgiveness does not just concern his mother, his father, or other people who have betrayed his trust. The major conundrum for the young man is the forgiveness he can grant himself. In my opinion, this is a universal issue as nearly everyone has struggled to forgive themselves and move on.
I did not find any grammar mistakes. Additionally, there wasn’t anything I disliked about this book.
I rate Teething Problems 5 out of 5 stars. It was an enjoyable and captivating read. It is a perfect book to read in one sitting.
I would recommend this book to people who are fond of short novels, to people who like a stream-of-consciousness narrative as well as to those who want to discover that type of narration.
