Praesidium by McKinley Aspen is the first book in the Shadows in the Wind series. During Kathryn Bek's fifth birthday, an uninvited guest came to her house. And when that guest left, so did her father, David Bek. Twenty-two years later, Kathryn had just finished college. On the morning of the college recruitment fair, Kathryn met the mysterious Raphael Landy, who recruited her to join Hope & Global Support or HGS. An organization that worked in the shadows fighting the forces of evil. Three other people were also recruited: Michael, Ashley, and Greg. They were chosen because they were special and from the day they were born, they were meant to do this job. They will need to use every special power they had because their opponent, the Paolucci Family, is not from this world. What exactly are Kathryn, Michael, Ashley, and Greg’s power? And what exactly is the Paolucci family? With a world of magic, murder, and mystery before her, Kathryn Bek will learn that her past may hold the key to the future.

What I liked the most about this book is the premise. It is about a war between angels and demons since ancient times, and it continues to this day. It is just the kind of book I like to read. However, being the first book of the series, there isn’t much information yet about the real identity of the HGS. There are hints all over the book, but the greater scheme hasn’t been unveiled yet. Also, the way the author wrote the ending made me want to read the next book even more. I also like the fast-paced action in this book. Kathryn and her team were jumping from one mission to the other like there was no tomorrow. Aside from Kathryn’s romantic relationship, there aren’t many side stories between their missions. I liked it because it made me want to keep reading to find out what happens next.

The author also did an incredible job of describing everything that was happening in the book. One example is when the characters had a mission inside a palace. In every turn they took and every door they opened, the author made a very detailed description that made me able to imagine what happened vividly. My favorite part is when they had a car chase. The author explained it very well, making it a very fun experience.

I have nothing to dislike about this book, and it is exceptionally well-edited. There are no errors or typos. I gladly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Fast-paced action, interesting characters, and a thrilling premise make this book a must-read for those who love supernatural battles between good and evil.

I recommend this book to readers who like supernatural stories. Readers who like fast-paced action would also enjoy this book. God and angels are rarely mentioned, but they are a prominent theme throughout the book. Readers who don’t believe in that kind of thing might want to reconsider reading this book.
