Review of A Pocketful of $20s
Everyone knows Christmastime may just be the most challenging time of year to have no money. Nothing feels worse than being unable to get your loved ones the gifts you believe they deserve. Luckily Lynn Price’s mother, Dorothy, started a tradition to help those less fortunate than herself. When Dorothy is no longer able to carry out the longstanding tradition herself, Lynn takes over. Though she is busy with her job as a nursing director, she manages to find five people she believes need this money and, unexpectedly, becomes involved in their lives.
At this time, Lynn lives with her boyfriend Alan. While there are some definite sparks between the two, she isn't sure he is the one for her. On her journey of aiding these five people, she captures the attention of two new men; a detective she grew up with, and a doctor working at her hospital. To find out who she chooses, you will have to give A Pocketful of $20s by Madeline Lawrence a read.
I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only did it highlight the complex issue of money problems, but it also showed the audience that despite what they may believe, nobody fully grasps what a stranger is dealing with. I believe this emphasizes the need for kindness and less judgment.
I immensely enjoyed the way the book was structured; with about 60 very short chapters. I find I generally enjoy books with more concise chapters more than I do books with longer chapters. I feel as though the constant breaks in the story keep me captivated and wanting to find out what happens next. I equally enjoyed how the author began every chapter with the names of the people who would be involved, as it was enormously helpful in keeping the reader from being confused at all.
During my time reading this book, I found nothing negative to say about it. I thought it was well written, carefully thought out, and very compassionate. To make my reading experience even better, I found this book to be exceptionally edited, as I discovered no errors. As a result of all the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I would enthusiastically recommend this book to readers who enjoy an easy and fun read – sometimes including a few more complex topics. I believe it would be better suited to mature readers as it does contain a few instances of light profanity, and does mention topics like sexual and domestic violence.
