Review of Kate Winters

After five-year-old Kate Winter's mother is killed in a car accident, Martin Winters explains that her mother will always be in their hearts. Five-year-old Jennifer Pruit's grandmother feels obligated to raise her after Jennifer watches her mother kill her father and then herself. She provides food and shelter but little else to Jennifer. Although the two girls grow up with different personalities, they become best friends when they are 16. They become inseparable, and where you saw one, you saw the other. After they graduate from college, Jennifer becomes a middle-school teacher, and Kate becomes a lawyer. Their past emotions come alive after a crime brings an incident when Kate was 17 back to life. This is a well-written three-part book with a fast-paced plot. The character development made it easy for me to empathize with Jennifer and Kate as they coped with what life had to offer them. I like Kate's strength and how she helped the introverted Jennifer become a stronger version of herself. It was relatable when the two teenage girls made lists of what they considered a man's perfect characteristics. I remember doing that with my friends when I was a teenager. There are a lot of life lessons to learn in this book. My favorite one was, "Friends don't have obligations to friends." I believe this wholeheartedly because you should never expect anything in return for helping friends.
This enjoyable book has only one thing I would change about it. I prefer that separate books within a book have titles. The plot flows smoothly between these books, and it is unclear why it was separated into three parts. The lack of titles is a personal preference and not necessarily a flaw in the book. Therefore, it will not influence the rating I give this book.
A professional editor missed only a handful of errors while editing this book. It is an enjoyable book full of suspense that has an unexpected ending that is perfect for the plot. My only option is to give this fantastic book 5 out of 5 stars.
This book is for mature romance, mystery, or crime thriller fans. You will find all three genres within this book. There is some disturbing sexual content and non-borderline profanity, so if you are sensitive to this type of content, you may want to avoid this book.
