Review of A Pocketful of $20s
Lynn Price is an emergency department director at Deer Park Hospital in North Carolina. The people in her life include her mother Dorothy, her brother George and his wife, and several other people she has met on different encounters and at work.
At the beginning of the story, her life is described as having a wonderful career, but the men in her life have brought the worst of times. She is currently having a difficult time with the relationship she is in. Other than that, she is continuing her mom's legacy of handing out twenty-dollar bills on Christmas to those who sincerely need them.
A Pocket Full of $20s by Madelaine Lawrence is a fictional narrative. This beautiful story has been well-developed. Lynn is the main character; she interacts well and in a unique way with every other character introduced by Madelaine. The language used is also very simple, making it easy for readers of any level to follow the story.
I loved how the author wrote the character's thoughts and introduced a mini-story in between. The mini-story was during Christmas; it was a book read by Lynn to the children about kids who didn't have gifts during Christmas. These little breaks from the main story made it an interesting read.
I will list a few of the messages I got from this book. First, Lynn sends a strong message to women: be able to get out of situations they are not comfortable with. Second, the little acts of kindness that we do can have a great impact on someone's life. Lynn handed out 20 dollars to strangers, but it changed both of their lives tremendously.
The relationship Dorothy had with her children is superb. It sends a message to other parents about how to relate to their children. Lynn and George are so free with their mother that they can discuss anything; they also joke a lot together, and most importantly, they have each other's backs.
I would have loved a little drama in the romance. I will flashback to when Lynn was breaking up with Alan and was looking to buy a new house. I expected something dramatic to happen, for example, money magically disappearing from Lynn's account and her being unable to buy the house. Also, Stan and Peter work their way to Lynn's heart. Other than that, it has been professionally edited. The story is okay; I enjoyed reading it a lot. My expectation will not make me deduct a star; I will rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to young adults. It is an easy read that includes inspirational acts and romance.
