Review of Cynthia and Dan
Cynthia and Dan: Cyber War by Dorothy May Mercer taught me a lot more than I bargained for. I was along for a nice romantic ride and found out a lot more along the way - about terrorism threats to our security and the international war raging over the internet. It follows Cynthia as head of security to a senator and her personal and professional experiences. Her brother Glenn runs a very hi-tech investigating business and Cynthia works with him on a project of eradicating harmful websites around the world.
This book is the third in the Washington McBride novels. I have not read either of the previous two books but this one was a good stand-alone novel and didn't make me feel like I'd jumped into a story halfway through. I wouldn't necessarily have chosen a book just to learn about these things but the romantic story line and easy writing style made it very interesting and easy to understand all the tech jargon. There is a sex scene but the author Dorothy May Mercer has considered this in a sensitive way by marking very clearly 'This Section Rated R' at the beginning of the scene and at the end of the scene has clearly written 'End R Rated Section.' It did not go into a lot of detail so it did not seem pornographic at all. There were no swear words. Sky is quite a religious man and there is a piece written about him going to confession. Does he confess everything though?
There wasn't anything I disliked in this book although I thought Sky was the too-perfect man and I didn't believe in him for most of the story. That may have been the author’s intention, however.
It is the first book I have read in a while that had absolutely no spelling errors or other typos. The editing is excellent. I rate this book four out of four stars as I don't have any interest in political stories but yet this one picked me up and I didn't want to let go until I finished it. I was satisfied with the way the story ended but the author has deliberately left a few things unfinished. Interestingly there is a sequel to this book which carries on the adventures of Cynthia and whichever man she has chosen.
This book would be enjoyed by a large range of readers - romance readers, tech nerds and anyone with an interest in cyber security.
