The language spoken in Wessex in those times would be incomprehensible to those of us who speak English today. Using contractions sounds like an effort by the author to make the book more readable.

Thanks for the review. Historical fiction can be of interest to me depending on the topic. This does sound like something that I may like, but I don't know if it will be at the top of my to read list. I am glad to hear you really liked it and gave it 4 stars.

This book sounds right up my alley. I love historical fiction, and I loved the book and the movie Beowulf. (Have you ever tried reading that in Old English? It's not easy!) The use of contractions and some modern words may cause some issues for me, but no one person can think of everything! Thank you for the enticing review.

I always thought the Beowulf stories were fantasy, but you claim this to be historical fiction!

Despite that this book sounds like it would be an awesome read, thanks for the great review.

The very first thing that shines through in Millie Thom’s Shadow of the Raven (the first book in the Sons of Kings series) is the author’s obvious passion for this time period and the historical background. You can clearly feel her engrossing interest in all things pertaining to the pagan Danes and their rebellious warrior lifestyle. Luckily, I find this particular culture and time period engaging as well (although I must admit that I am no scholar on the subject as I am surmising the author seems to be). I greatly enjoyed the way the author managed to insert little cultural tidbits of the time here and there throughout the story without being too distracting or obvious about it. When I first saw the list of character names I grimaced a bit because I knew I would probably be mentally butchering their names throughout, but I enjoyed the authentic feel it gives the story enough to bear with it.

As for the characters and the story itself, I found it drew me in fairly quickly and definitely sparked my imagination. There was plenty of drama and action to keep me interested and the writing style is excellent. All in all, definitely an enjoyable read :)

As someone who enjoys historical fiction, this book sounds like a must read. I would have also been thrown off a bit by the contractions. Thanks for a great review!

Thank you for this wonderfully written review. I downloaded my copy today, I love this genre. The only thing that gave me a bit of a headache are those NAMES! I know that they had very strange names back then, but these are at the top of the weird sphere. I'm sure I'll get used to them, and I look forward to the read.

It's easy to see that you thoroughly enjoyed this book and it sure has got me curious about it. I kind of like those strange names and the underlining feel of mystery and suspense wafting through the review. Great job. :)

All that triggers in my mind is when to read this one. I like pieces with so much suspense and anxiety. That review is exceptionally superb
