Jon, an advertising executive, finds out while on a trip that his wife Tam is not being faithful, despite him remaining loyal after twenty-one years of marriage. So he enlists his lifetime buddy, Mike, who runs a security firm, to look deeper into the matter. But they say never to ask questions you don’t want the answer to… Added to that, a near-perfect woman is seducing Jon. Can he trust her? And what's the role of a Colombian drug lord in what appears to be a simple domestic conflict? What started with Jon finding out that his wife was cheating will unveil an intricate web of lies, lust, danger, and deceit that will drag everyone down with it and might give them a chance to experience things they never could have imagined. Tangled Web by Gene Moon is an erotic thriller that mostly follows Jon and his family, as well as Mike, as they work not only to untangle a complicated net of deceit and crime but also to reconstruct their lives after the truth.

My favorite asset of this book is the balance between the different subplots, mainly erotica and suspense. Too many sex scenes in a row can be mind-numbing, but the author kept me glued to the pages with the many twists in the mystery subplot and with increasingly spicy intimate scenes. I also applaud that the intelligence of some female characters is acknowledged when it’s easy, due to the genre of the book, to just focus on the physical appearance. It is commendable, too, that the author approaches current social problems, such as so-called “revenge porn,” with sensitivity and realism. Furthermore, the character development is outstanding. The personality of each character is perfectly defined, their motives and backstories are well-thought-out, and all of them evolve as the plot progresses. There are some very intriguing characters, such as Mama Kat, who I hope comes back in a sequel.

This book resorts to many tropes that are intrinsic to the genre, but that can be bothersome to some readers: the endless libido of all the characters, an insane amount of climaxing, and exaggerated dialogues, for example. Of course, one needs to count on the reader’s will to use their suspension of disbelief in this regard. Other concerns arise with scenes that fall into moral controversy ground, such as incest. While I enjoy erotica, I can say this made me extremely uncomfortable. Finally, and I think this is the only objective flaw, there’s an extreme emphasis on the race of the characters. I’m aware that, whether it’s real or not, black men are supposed to be particularly well-endowed. However, a character acknowledging that someone needs intimacy “... Even if for her it involved black men” appears as just plain racist.

The book has over ten editing mistakes. These are minor, and considering that this is a long book (440 pages), they’re few and far between and do not diminish from the reading experience.

Because of the perfect balance between erotica and thriller, the outstanding character development, and the progressive stance of this book regarding social issues, I rate Tangled Web by Gene Moon 3 out of 4 stars. I didn’t give it a perfect rating because of the excessive and unnecessary emphasis on race and the editing mistakes.

Readers of hardcore erotica, as well as those who enjoy smart erotic thrillers, will enjoy Tangled Web immensely. It’s obvious that this book is only suitable for a mature audience, but the nature of the story calls for a warning that this book should only be read by people with enough criteria to distinguish what happens in books and movies from what happens in real life. Readers who enjoy “soft” erotica or spicy fairy tale romances would find this book lacking in the romance element and too intense in the erotic areas. Likewise, people who are looking for a full-on mystery will find that the book devotes too much time to other subplots. Sensitive readers should note that the novel contains mentions of statutory rape and underage sex, and proceed accordingly.

Sounds like a deep plot with great character development. The errors might be distracting, but the suspense would be a good drawing point for me. Great Review!

The errors are not that many for such a long book but, as you know, once they exceed ten occurrences the book loses its perfect rating. And, honestly, the character development surprised me because erotic books often have flat, stereotyped characters.
Thanks again for your constant support!

Nice review. This story really sounds like a web, an interconnetivities of chains of lies, lust, and deceit. I hope Jon don't go down with them.

It is! I never expected such smart and convoluted subplots from an erotic novel.

I can't tell you without spoiling the novel for you, but his wife was... foolhardy to say the least.
Thank you for your kind comment!
