This book has a title that gives nothing away but gets potential readers curious about what the book entails. That title is The Maple Seed Helicopter.

This book follows the stories of the protagonist, Marco, and his adopted brothers, Dario and George. All three of them grew up in an orphanage and escaped at a young age. They met Domenico, a farmer, and his wife, Elisetta, who cared for them until they decided to pursue their dreams as young adults.

On the day they left the orphanage, they were almost taken into the camp of the German soldiers who captured them. They narrowly escaped that fate due to the kindness of one of the soldiers—a man named Patrik. Prior to being captured, they had sneaked out of the orphanage to go to the river at a period not too long after WW1. This was the reason why there were soldiers around. One of the soldiers had misplaced his gun, and when the army of soldiers came to look for the weapon, they saw the kids—they had found the gun and were curious about it.

I appreciated the pace of the story. It developed at a steady pace, building up to a climax at some point, then slowing down again. It went on like this throughout the book. I liked the writer's writing style, and I loved each character too. Even though the main character was the most developed, the author did not completely ignore the others. He also gave them their fair share of screen time. This made the plot feel more relatable. This book also made me a bit emotional; although I was not close to tears, I could feel Marco's pain when he went through tough times.

There was not much to dislike about this book. Although some readers might complain about the few errors the book contained, those errors were not distracting or numerous enough to get me frustrated. In the end, it still felt like the book was decently edited.

After having sung the praises of Marco Collina, the author, it would be absurd to give this book anything less than a 4 out of 4 stars. It was an engaging story and much more.

If you are looking for a very fast-paced fictional story, this is not the book for you. This book is more steady in its development, so it is more suitable for readers who are patient and like to read about people's struggles. Even though this is a fictional story, I think people who enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies will find this book entertaining.
