Toast: A Ride to Hell (Book1) by Rick Allen tells the story of an invasion by a North Korean group, the Alliance Troops. Dick and Patch Mann, together with their couple friends, led a peaceful and sedated life in Taswegia. After a holocaust, a broadcast from UHF communications hinted at an upcoming trouble. Dick and his friends had to flee their homes to save their lives. Their journey is quite eventful, as they encounter life-threatening close calls. Dick and his friends reach Hells Beach, which becomes a refuge and haven for them. But, how long can this fort hold out against the troops who have just an order to kill everyone?

This book was written to give a young reader insight into what previous wars might have looked like. Reading about people fleeing from their homes for safety, one cannot help being thankful for peace without any wars. This book is suspenseful. One keeps wondering if the fleeing group would make it to safety. The author introduced a twist when the troops would discover their hideout. For the sake of spoilers, I wouldn't release more of the twists. The characters were unique and interesting. I particularly liked reading about Annie Palmer. Though I was disturbed by the killings in this book, especially the troopers, I did not miss the adventure and hints of romance the author shared.

I found nothing else to consider negative about the book. The author did justice to the title, which summarises the travelers' experiences and even their fate in their supposed haven. Though the narration of their experiences was too lengthy, I didn't mind reading every ounce of it.

Overall, my rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. There was no tangible reason to deduct a star from my rating. Even though I found a few errors in this book, they were insufficient to impede comprehensive reading. An average reader will still enjoy the flow of the text. The book was still professionally edited.

This story captured invasion and adventure as people struggled to survive. It will appeal to readers who enjoy reading about wars and survivors. Readers who may be victims of wars or readers sensitive to killings and bloodshed may not enjoy reading this book. Younger readers should be protected from the vices in this book. The degree of the explicit content might only be suitable for mature audiences.
