[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Reborn" by J. A. Maverick.]
Annalise Grada is a young veterinary doctor working towards her doctorate. She grew up on a farm with her parents and has a best friend named Ruth. Her life couldn't have been any better—or so she thought. When Annalise meets Aiden in a little coffee shop, she is attracted to him. But after she witnesses Aiden's fight with another man named Dorhn, it dawns on Annalise that powered individuals exist.
Initially thinking herself to be crazy, she refuses to tell the police about what she witnessed, but she finally accepts the reality of her experience after witnessing Ruth turn invisible before her eyes. Annalise finds out that Aiden is Ruth's fiancé from childhood and that they are part of an experiment carried out by an organization named Eco-Health to create individuals to take over the world. She also discovers that she is a part of the experiment. In a bid to search for explanations, things begin to go awry. What does she do about the attraction to her best friend’s fiancé? What happens when she goes looking for answers?
Reborn, written by J. A. Maverick, is a suspense and action-filled book about a young lady who discovers that everything she had ever known as her life has been a web of lies woven by a research facility called Eco-Health. Annalise is a determined, brave, and resolute human who has found herself adapting to new powers and information about her life. She didn't let the betrayals of her family stop her from showing compassion to those who needed it. I liked how the author wrote the story from the points of view of different characters, although this meant I encountered some events more than once. While these events were the same, the different perspectives ensured they didn't feel repetitive. I also enjoyed the chapter titles; they contributed humor to the story and served as plot milestones.
Maverick's writing was thrilling and full of action. The humor in the story and his descriptions of powered individuals were enjoyable. The author was also able to infuse romance naturally into a story full of chaos and fighting.
There was nothing to dislike about this book. I could barely find any typographical or grammatical errors, which means it was professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the humor in the story, the different perspectives in the book, the fast-paced action, and the touch of romance in the story. I recommend this book to young adults who love stories about people with superpowers.
