Review by Sheilaread -- Always Before Me by John Servant
Always Before Me, is one of three Catholic-based novels written by John Servant. The book is heavily rooted in Catholicism. All of the characters in the book have some connection to the Catholic Church. John does a great job of showing us his expanded knowledge of Catholicism, as well as to the Catholic Church itself. The practices, prayers and setting all point to the full evidence of Catholicism. This book written by John Servant, is comprised of three separate sections, woven together into an informative and interesting story, within a short easy-to-read book. It’s a story about three different men. A Saint, a Sinner who was accused of sexual misconduct and a regular man, like many other men, struggling to find his own way, who is trying to reach his dreams, held onto his faith and hope in God and seeking redemption among life’s many disappointments. Just like every other human, these men also had their problems and each one encountered their own share of life’s tragedies, but at the end lessons were learned and you will have to read on to see how each one turned out!
First, you’ll read about the main character, a man who is completely lost and discouraged. He sees his dreams of becoming a teacher vanishing away. He learned through faith, how to find what he’s been looking for all along, even while he spent years in prison. He shared with us how his continued hope and the power of prayer and continued trust in the Lord got him through some of the hardest times of his life and eventually brought him into a better place. He will later become a Chaplain in the prison.
The saint is an innocent Priest, wrongfully sentenced to prison, who shows us by his words, actions, patience and enduring much suffering, together with prayer, hope and mercy, what it takes to be a saint in today’s modern world.
The sinner is a man who was wrongfully accused of sexual acts in a high school where he had been a teacher, and who because of the accusations, also finds himself in prison and became an employee, but also sees his life’s dreams fading away. He can now only find a job as a prison psychologist.
Each man will go through much suffering and endure many trials that will bring out the flaws and strengths in each of their characters. Even though each man endures many trials and suffering that will bring out the flaws and strength in each of their characters, their journey will have interesting endings, but only after facing many unexpected twists and rough turns and conflict. Also a story about a very unusual involvement with a gang leader inside the prison, which will greatly affect these men and change their lives forever.
Since this book is quite short, and fairly easy-to-read, and deeply rooted in biblical lessons and Catholic principles, I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a good moral based book. Both Christians and Catholics would probably enjoy the stories and the life lessons given inside. It is also showing us that, despite everything life throws at us, it is never to late to seek redemption!
John also wrote a guide about possible ways to handle life’s problems and trials through prayer, confession and believing in Christ.
How strong are you to defend your values? How far can you be pushed about your beliefs? These are just some of the questions that the Author brings up in the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing skill in this book. John showed me that a religious novel could also appeal to everyone. He did so well in catering to the reading needs of religious and non-religious readers alike. He showed great respect when talking with people of a different faith. There were stories to follow and lessons to be learned from this book. The part I liked most was the way he made the book fun, interesting and engaging.
I was so engaged in this story while reading it, that I felt several emotions throughout the entire book. I was sad, angry, excited, surprised and encouraged. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about the story, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I feel this book was professionally edited with no errors. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to Christians, Catholics or anyone who enjoys religious books or books with fast-paced twist and turn stories. We are all faced with challenges and situations in our lifetime and this is a good book to read about ways to cope with those problems.
