[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Peregrination" by Sonny Weathersby.] [rwc=id358119-125]4 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]"Part of being a man means making decisions that weigh the balance of tomorrow today." This quote from the book Peregrination: The Journey to Wellness by Sonny Weathersby sums up the protagonist's accomplishments and failures. This book, classified as 'other fiction,' reads like nonfiction. The protagonist's name is Sonny Weathers.

Sonny grew up poor in the inner cities of Los Angeles, California, in an abusive home. His father was a drug addict who physically abused his mother, and his mother was physically and mentally abusive to her children. Sonny's mother took the children to church often, and Sonny was the church drummer. The church was his safe-haven. His father frequently came and went, leaving his mother to work and provide for the family. Sonny left home at an early age after a conflict with his mother. He faced homelessness, grief over the loss of loved ones, depression, complicated relationships resulting in three children to provide for, and failed career choices. Sonny went from playing minor league baseball to seeking a career in the NFL (National Football League) to professional light-weight boxing and attempting to make the Olympic boxing team. He even tried an acting career and eventually joined the military. Sonny saw his share of victories as well as failures. His ultimate goal in life was to become a successful professional athlete and take care of his family. Through it all, he never lost his faith in God. How do things turn out for Sonny? Does he find his ultimate purpose in life, or does he continue to search?

Weathersby's writing style is simple and easy to follow. The author paints a clear picture of each character in the story and their distinct personalities. Most of the chapters begin with either a statistic or a quote. Sonny takes the reader on his journey of trying to find himself. Time after time, when he believes he is on the right road for his life, he comes to an unexpected intersection and has to choose a different route.

What I liked most about this book were Sonny's perseverance and determination. When Sonny set his sights on a goal, he fought long and hard for it, and if he failed, he pressed on to the next one. Living in the inner cities of Los Angeles, Sonny could have given in to peer pressure and took to the streets and joined a gang. He never did. He remained true to his faith despite his disappointments. There wasn't anything I disliked about this book. At 167 pages, it is a short read, and there is no violence, profanity, or erotic content.

I found a few minor errors that were mostly typos, but they didn't interfere with my reading experience. There are also a few formatting issues that should be corrected. Overall, the book is well-written and relatively well-edited. The story is not a fierce page-turner filled with heart-pounding scenes and violent or erotic content, nor is it a story about religion and conversion. Still, it is a pleasant read from beginning to end that will resonate with most. I am delighted to give Peregrination: The Journey to Wellness by Sonny Weathersby 4 out of 4 stars.

I would recommend this book to all ages and people of all interests. It is an inspiring read that everyone can enjoy and probably relate to their own life. And in case you are just like me and don't know what peregrination is, here is one definition: "a journey, especially a long or meandering one." (Google's Oxford Languages). ****** Peregrination View: on Bookshelves
