Although Adrift is set months after Strong Heart, it seems the characters have not moved on from their last trip into the wilderness. Some things have changed for the better, such as Sarah can now live with her grandfather Tom. For the most part, however, it is as if everyone is caught in a hiatus waiting to see what the outcome of the mining rights dispute with Buckthorn will be. Mostly, Myra is busy searching for a way to stop the mining from happening, and Pete is slowly recovering from the gunshot wound that he took last summer. Tom and Sarah are sussing out their relationship while he looks for new work.

William has gone back to work on the Seattle Express, lugging cargo from Russia to Alaska. On the way home, tragedy strikes when the Seattle Express catches on fire and the crew is forced to abandon the ship. Crammed into two tiny lifeboats, the crew battles the harsh elements of winter in the Alaskan gulf to survive. Then, William’s lifeboat is shipwrecked on an island. They try to make the best of what warmth and shelter they find, but someone will have to make the arduous trek across the island’s rocky peaks to get help, or else none of them will make it.

Back at sea a down-on-it’s-luck salvage team, on the tug Warhorse, picks up the SOS signal of the Express. They race against Buckthorn’s salvage tugs to board the ship first and claim the fee for hauling it to the harbour. More tragedy strikes as the salvage team struggle to secure the vessel.

The story at times seems disjointed as Sheldon weaves the various viewpoints of the characters together. There is a lot of action, as the crews of both the Seattle Express and the Warhorse fight against the odds to survive, which I found appealing. I found the way Sheldon drew the different characters together through solidarity of circumstances very satisfying to read.

Adrift by Charlie Sheldon is a good read if you like adventure, nature, and stories about overcoming the elements. It is suited to a more adult audience since most of the characters are on the older side and the subject is more mature. Expect some mild swearing as well as no sexual content.

Adrift gets a rating of 3 out of 4 stars from me. While it is well-written, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the first book. The ancient race of people that made Strong Heart so fascinating are barely mentioned, and I missed that viewpoint.
