Review by Fahd James -- The Reel Sisters
Out of all the books I have read so far to review, I read this one in the shortest time. Not that I rushed through it, but I literally could not put it down. The novel kept me glued until the very end. The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings is a brilliant story about friendship, love and adventure. The main characters are five fly-fisher women whose friendship grew, developed and got nurtured by their love for the sport of fly fishing. The sport involves catching fish by putting fake flies at the end of a fishing line, and after successfully catching the fish, releasing the fish back into the water.
The story kicks off with a big surprise for the then four fly-fisher friends, when they fish out a naked girl from the river on one of their fly fishing trips. As time goes on, the girl blends in well with the four women who saved her and she becomes the fifth member of the sisterhood.
The chapters of the novel are the first hand personal accounts of the main characters, which puts the reader in the shoes of the characters. This helps the reader get a very good understanding of the events happening around the character. The five women fly fishers are all on a journey of some sort – just like the life story of any human being. One of them is on a journey to finding herself, the other is on a journey to finding peace in her heart after experiencing an unfortunate event in the past, the third one is on a journey to finding a better half to share her life with, the fourth one is on a journey to serve and inspire others, and the last one is on a journey of endurance and sacrifice as she has to raise a young family on her own due to the circumstances she finds herself in.
Amidst the challenges faced by the five friends, the author shows that one can get strength to carry on if they have wonderful company in the form of lovely friends and family. Furthermore, it is easier to deal with challenges if one has something to relax their mind, which in this case was the sport of fly fishing.
As the story unfolds, Michelle Cummings gives us some important life lessons. Some of them are, that everything happens for a reason; everything happens in its own time i.e. at the perfect time; talking about things helps improve the situation, and that it’s all right to live up to your own expectations and not feel bad about it, among others. The five friends help each other in finding answers along their journeys but in an unfortunate turn of events, tragedy strikes, taking the life of one of the main characters. It was a very sad part of the story. However, the author shows that one is capable of moving on from any loss they may experience.
In conclusion, The Reel Sisters is best suited for a mature audience because it contains many uses of foul language and a few scenes of sex and nudity. Nonetheless, I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because the book was very well edited such that I found pretty much no mistake at all. The story itself is brilliantly written, and it will keep you hooked to the book until the very end.
