Review: The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher

Post by jake_roar »

Another awesome book by Christopher Paul Curtis. The Watsons were a normal working class family from Flint, Michigan in the early 60s. The family is hilarious and have a lot of personality but not a lot of money. Times are tough for the Watsons so the family packs up and moves to Birmingham to be with family and find work. They pack up their old "Brown Bomber" car and drive south. Along the way the reader sees how it would have been to be a person of color in the south with all the segregation and prejudism. Racism is a hard topic for a kid to read about but the author introduces it in an easy to understand way. I couldn't put the book down.

I read the book back in elementary school. Wilona Watson reminds me a lot of my mom, especially her obsession with winter clothes.
