[Following is a volunteer review of "Dolphins Don’t Run Marathons" by Sam Brand.]
[rbc=4]id361066-125[/rbc]Sam Brand's book, Dolphins Don't Run Marathons , is an autobiographical, philosophical reflection of his journey from focusing solely on preparing to run marathons to living life to the fullest. Before his enlightenment, his purpose for living was only to race in the 26.2 mile New York Marathon. This book explains the steps he took to realize the importance of family, friends, and short runs.

The part I liked the most was how he immerses you into his life with minimal details required. You feel the thrill of running, the confliction of choosing between being a human ant or dolphin, and the relief of finally living happily. Interwoven with words of wisdom, his story allows you to experience and learn through and from his struggles.

There were only two things that bothered me. The first was the title page image. When I first saw it, I presumed that the book was a merely a children's story and regarded it as such. However, I soon realized that it was never intended for very young readers. The second is that, during certain parts of his narrative, he focuses on how great sex is and how we should treat it like a short run; fun, energetic, and pleasurable. That personally made me uncomfortable, but I understand that some readers enjoy those details.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 . There were very few errors in the text, and the story and wise words were applicable and reasonable to everyday people. Each short excerpt of his life was intriguing and attention capturing. I recommend this book for anyone who would like a quick, nice read.

This book's target audience is for those who are mature. The reason for this is the small amount of language and the mention of sex. The more specific audience is anyone who practices running for a marathon. Sam Brand wants to give those people what he had learned from being in the same situation and what he took from it.
