Supernatural and/or Horror/Spooky Tales Discussion

Since it's October and some of us may celebrate and/or acknowledge Halloween, I thought we'd continue our tradition of reading books that are either supernatural and/or considered horror or spooky.

Supernatural

• include some kind of contradiction to our typical world
• contradictions or elements typically cannot be explained by nature or science
• can be assumed they were created and/or originated from otherworldly forces

Horror/Spooky Tales

• meant to spook, disgust, and/or frighten us as readers
• can sometimes leave us having nightmares or just merely startle us
• can be assumed they were created and/or originated from otherworldly forces - not all has to be so frightening or gross, though
  Children's spooky books can be a source of entertainment and clean fun

I have read Dead Voices by Katherine Arden and loved it. It is the perfect book for Halloween and contains ghosts, adventures, and chilly atmosphere.

Nice! I read just one chapter so far (so not very far in), but I am already spooked out, lol.

I'm also reading The Chain, which isn't technically spooky, but the things that some people have to do I would consider horror-like.

I just finished reading a translated novel that is definitely filled with the supernatural. I wouldn't say it was horror because it didn't frighten me (and I'm a major scaredy cat) but it definitely has some horror elements. Dream a little dream by Kerstin Gier. It is the first part of the Silver Trilogy and the characters can see each other in their dreams after mistakenly making a pack to raise a demon. I started the second book Dream on right after finishing the first part.

In the past I used to read horror books much more often. In recent years I've been mostly rereading Stephen King's novels and occasionally some of his latest ones such as Pet Sematary and It.

I'm hoping to get around to some Lovecraft binge reading but I have to catch up on some things before I can dive into anything new. Fast approaching my official yearly reading goal; hope I make it.

Steven King's short story "The Mangler" is one of the weirdest supernatural stories out there. A laundry machine with a thirst for blood... Yeah. Leave it up to King.

Intensity by Dean Koontz was very chilling and scary. It was a page-turner that did not disappoint.
