ARA Review by Andromeda Flynn of Raven's Peak

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole is a novel about demons and the Council that hunts them down. Abigail, who is an untrusted member of the council meets Haatim after he is hired to follow her for stalking a man that she claimed was a demon, although she never really seemed to be following him, even through she intended on killing him for being a demon. Haatim and Abigail make an unlikely duo after Haatim decides he can't go back home and wants to help Abigail find demons after a major demon tries to possess him.

I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars because there were so many plot and conversation discrepancies that contradicted one another from the very beginning. Starting off, Reverend tells Frida his name isn't Reverend yet later on he has trouble remembering his real name so he wouldn't be put off by anyone calling him a name that he has come to know a his name. Frida is afraid of Reverend yet trust him to do a job no one else can do, even as she thought he may be a demon. If she thought he was a demon, why would she ask for his help or even go to him? If he was a demon wouldn't the council seek to destroy him, not imprison him? These contradictions are all from the prolog. There are many more throughout the story that are just as contradicting and make the story difficult to read and follow. For a further example, Abigail makes breakfast and takes a bite of Hattim's bacon. She had her own breakfast as well. After eating Hattim's bacon, she asks if it's Applewood because she loves Applewood bacon but she would know what kind of bacon it was from the package when she cooked it.

On a positive note, there are good, informative character descriptions and everyone had a place within the novel. Descriptions are well written and are informative. I enjoyed the writing style and composition.

Demons have only their goal as a demon yet in places demons can act like normal people (like George or the doctor) but are incapable of being human because they are demons and can only keep a host for so long. When Abigail was possessed the demon was buring her skin. Why does Abigail not have scars from when she was possessed, especially when the rest of the novel takes place 6 months later. The story doesn't follow through very well with what it tells readers. It makes the book unrealistic and difficult to be engrossed in.

Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole could be a great novel if the author made the story more realistic and have less discrepancies. I enjoyed how things were described although I did not enjoy the story.
