ARA Review by ElricaSteyn of Roan

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Roan: The tales of Conor Archer, vol.1
rating: 5/5
The story of Conor Archer, takes us back to the Celtic myths and legends, even though the story plays out in modern times. He is a very talented musician, often playing at a bar, where he met a strange biker for the first time. The man seems to be stalking him, wherever he goes. After tragedy struck when he lost his mother to cancer, Conor had to live with his Aunt Emily, in Tinker’s Grove. As soon as Conor arrived in Tinker’s Grove, strange things started awakening in the small town. People were looking at Conor with suspicion, calling him a ‘dark one’.

Conor could sense that something inside him is changing, especially after every encounter with the strange biker-man, Rory. He doesn’t trust Rory, since Rory wants him to become something else – something that he doesn’t want to become. The Abbot and his Aunt Emily, seems to know more about what is happening to Connor, but they refuse to tell him everything. The only thing that Connor do know, is that everyone is expecting him to become something, but nobody wants to tell him exactly what it is that he should be changing into.

Events starts unravelling the truth about Conor’s true identity, as a new genetic researcher, Dr. Drake, enters the town to work at DIOGENE, sponsored by the rich widow, Cate. Evil seems to follow the doctor and Cate, wherever they go. As more people turned against Conor, he learned to rely more on his friends, Jase, Beth and a very protective dog, Troubles. The story is full of suspension, action and mystery.

The Author has done a great job of mixing myths with reality. I love the different characters in the book, as each of them grow into the roles that they were meant to have. There is also a lot of emotions playing a big role in this book, as Conor is very reluctant to fulfil his destiny. I gave this book a 5/5 rating, for an excellent, captivating story. I would love to read the second book as well.

Young, as well as older readers, whom enjoy reading about mythology, would love this book. The story allows the reader to get to know the characters, their thoughts and their motives. It shows the reader how much the characters progress, grow, and also learn from their mistakes. They also get the chance to learn a lot from the past as well. The main character makes mistakes, which might have catastrophic consequences, since he is only a teenager, but he becomes a better person as he realises his mistakes.

The setting in which the story plays, gives the reader the feeling of a typical small town, where everybody knows everything about everyone. New people are often mistrusted and the town’s people becomes more guarded, when the town secrets are at stake. They don’t trust people from outside, to help them with their trouble, instead, they opt to solve their own problems. It had an excellent storyline and made me eager to read more. Well done to the author!
