ARA Review by Lisajayauthor of Free Fish Friday

The ARA Review Exchange is a system in which authors review other authors' books, generlaly in exchange for getting their own book reviews by other authors. However, the person who reviews a author's book is not the same person whose book that author reviewed. This way, author reviews do not influence each other, such as by an author being inclined to reward a good review by deliving one in return or deliver a negative review as revenge.

Free fish Friday: introducing Slack Mills (Slacker Mills mysteries book 1) by Lee Stone

This is an interesting mystery set in Florida. The book centers around a fisherman, Slacker Mills, and the death of his best friend. It begins with Slacker narrating the story, discussing who he is and how he met his best friend Jerry. Slacker definitely lives up to his name, a high school dropout, whose only ambition is to fish. He is an interesting character that the author discusses in length in the first quarter of the book.

The author paints a noticeably clear picture of who Slacker is, his lifestyle and his friendship with Jerry. Jerry’s death occurs early on however this spurs the author to go into the upbringing of Slacker. This is a little strange and hard to understand why at this point he would go into that rather than continue with the investigation of his best friends’ death.

Majority of the book leading up to Jerry’s death can be slow at times even though it is incredibly detailed. Going into the upbringing of Slacker makes it a bit slower. The book would have benefitted from going right into the investigation of Jerry’s death as a way to bring some edge and excitement to the story.

The characters are well thought out and described and an air of mystery is left around Jerry however this is the only intriguing part until the investigation becomes under way of his death. If you can get past the slowness and background of the first quarter of the book, then you will definitely enjoy the investigation because that is the real mystery and where the author excels.

I am giving this story a 4 out of 5 due to descriptive story telling however the slowness of the book until the investigation is what led me to drop it to a 4.
