I think the author chose the location because he knew it, but it was over done. Some of the passages read almost like a travel brochure. He referenced the number of restaurants and the time to walk places on numerous locations.

The author lives close to that region I think may be chose it because of that.

I think the author chose this particular island due to his vast knowledge plus islands are one of the adventurous places around. The setting befits this novel.

Taking the writing into consideration, I think it was a convenient choice.

I do not think there was any particular reason for choosing the book setting and it was merely due to his knowledge of the area.

The author lives close to Port Jefferson and seems to know and love the place very much. I guess it was natural for him to choose the village as the main setting. Either that or the shops and places he advertises so well in the book paid him to do so.

The author probably chose that setting because that way he wouldn't have to do too much background research to make details add up. Being familiar with the geographical area and the culture and mannerisms of the residents makes it easier to write a credible story that will resonate with readers even from that region.

I think that Port Jefferson was chosen simply because the author had a lot of knowledge about the area. Then again, there is an advantage of using an expensive area as the setting of the story. As numerous crimes were committed, this helped show that crime can happen anywhere (not just in poor neighborhoods).

Choosing a setting that he is aware of could have been a deliberate decision, and I am quite sure that it worked. The setting of the story is perfect.

From all evidence, the author not only lives close by, he is also sympathetic to the plight of the police department there whom it seems, had previously suffered from this kind of tragedy before. So its only natural.

The author living close to Port Jefferson and having good knowledge of the environment might have made him chose the setting. I also think He chose the place based on the fact that the place has transitioned to a tourist-based economy and a major hub to other cities. Which means that much people who reside in New York would have a better understanding of the area.

I think it's always easier to write about what you know. And the author was able to make the setting more believable as he knew what he was talking about.

I think he chose this setting because he has extensive knowledge of the place and because he knew he would be able to describe it to the reader in a way that would help the reader connect with the story. Some authors will write about places they have no actual knowledge of and the book ends up sounding like a superficial attempt at its best. I will say however that the author did go a bit over board in describing port Jeff, on some parts I felt like I was reading a tourist guide of the village.
