I like to think the best of people; however, I just really do not like Hiram. From what I understand, he didn't care for his first wife while she was sick. That's his personality. He gets better later, but that is later, not during his first wife. I just can't imagine him being good to her.

Hiram has no humanly feeling towards others. He is self obsessed and marries just for the his and his kids convenience. He has no family attachment and doesn't spends time with them. I am damn sure he must not be treating her well. A wife needs love and time of her husband and not monetary provisions. She must have felt ignored too

It's interesting how we always try to justify some outrageous behavior with one explanation or another. In this case, you may be right. Hiram might have been unable to handle his grief for his first wife, so he refused to ever again allow himself to get emotionally involved with any other woman. This does not justify his behavior towards Carole or the other women in his life, though.

I think Mcdowell was scared of opening his heart to another woman. He was hiding behind a busy schedule.

Missing her doesn’t seem like a valid justification for the way he treats women. I hadn’t thought of that as a reason for his actions but maybe it played a part. I think he was just so self involved that he didn’t think women had much value to him other than physical

I don't think he misses her, or at least that's not a reason (or excuse) for his bad behavior. There are people who treat well people they consider equals (mentally or socially or monetary). It was clear that he didn't consider her current wife as an equal but rather a toy he has bought and got bored of. I feel there is not enough information to decide how he treated his first wife.

Unfortunately, I think that he treats everyone badly because he's full of himself.

he was having a pet concept in his mind about the women. He was equally bad to all of the women not only one and not two but he used his ill treatment to all of the women coming in his way. Because he was the abuser of ladies.

When it came to respecting women, he was a total failure. He did not treat his wife well even when she was sick; Sophie also mentions this when he went to visit her. So yes he was not respectful of anyone let alone a women.

Considering the kind of person he was in the first half, he ill-treated everyone, i think even his wives.

I believe Sophie called Hiram out for treating her mother poorly, therefore, I assume he treats all women poorly. What I do wonder is what Hiram's relationship was like with his own mother.

I don't think he treated her very well either. I just don't think he has the ability to do that. However, he did care for her (I think) and her passing did affect him in some ways.
but I think she would have treated his mother badly too

I don't think Hiram McDowell treats all females badly because he consistently feels the absence of his first wife who is deceased. He treats all women like that. I guess he doesn't support sexual equality norm.

I think he treated her badly like he treated all women. I think he didn't miss her at all.

I don't think he's treating all the other women badly just because he misses his second wife. He's not that much of an emotional person. Also, just because you lost your loving wife doesn't give anyone the right to treat other women like they are trash, disposable.
