I read the book and would recommend it to others. William H Coles is a great writer. Even tough I did not like the arrogant and selfish Hiram, I still enjoyed the story line. I gave it a 4 out of 4 stars.

The good doctor has great stories to tell. I have read three of his books, including this one, and have yet to be disappointed with him. My only issue is the book's editing, mainly concerning homophones. I hope the author can get a good editor on board. This issue constrains me to give this fascinating story 3 out of 4 stars.

Halfway through and I'm hooked! Am loving this developing storyline and resent it when I have to leave it and do other things, like work! Will definitely enjoy reviewing this one... :D

I found the Hiram in Part One an objectionable creep, though hardship certainly improved him in Part Two. I think the book had too many twists and turns- some of which weren't quite connected sufficiently.

I gave the book a star rating of 2. I know that sounds terrible, but I was not impressed with the novel at all, and I was so hoping I would be. I found myself not liking Hiram just because..well, look at him! What is there to like? Ego-centered and a womanizer, and then murders his grandson who went on a rampage. It just had too much negative to it for my tastes. And, then I am supposed to feel sorry for him because he is running away from the law after escaping his jail time for murder? It just struck such a wrong chord with me. I know my review will be an unpopular one, but I have to be true to me. :) I do know that if a writer can make me feel so angry, then he isn't a bad writer..it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I probably won't be recommending this one to others, and I really didn't find a connection between any of the characters. What I did like, however, was with all the characters involved, the author did go out of his way to be sure he made each chapter about each one individually. The organization and clarity of that were nice.
Everything happens for a reason...

I enjoyed reading the book a lot. I liked seeing how McDowell's personality changed during the second half of the story. I thought the whole story was enjoyable

I rated McDowell 4 out of 4 stars. And I think the life challenges were devastating and frustrating to him. The rise and fall of the renowned surgeon was pathetic to me, and I think in this modern era we should all learn lessons from his mistakes.

I always like Mr. Cole's work, he's a master of twists. From the sample and several reviews I've read, the book gets top rating from me

I like the idea of this book being an unpredictable read and with a key theme of redemption. Very interesting.

I like stories that can make unlikable characters more sympathetic. It's a bold approach to take for a story. Yet, the author did a great job with it.

For several reasons I don't plan to read the book. I can't get past the description let alone actually open it up to read it.
