They were kindred spirits. Both were outsiders, both had addictions, both had trouble finding love. I thought their friendship was the strong point of the book.

Both Gary and Duke are deserters of their various homes. They acknowledge this similarity and it brings them together and form a basis of their friendship.

According to the law of attraction, like attracts like. So, I would say that Duke and Gary are two dysfunctional souls drawn together by their weakness for alcohol.
I like your argument. Their dysfunctional souls got attracted to each other thus they could connect quite easily

Luck and opportunity drew them together. Should your question instead be, what made their relationship work? Or what kept them together?

They had similar things going on with them: they were both addicts and seemed to be running from something.

I think what brought them together is first the fact that they both ran away from home, secondly, they were both struggling with addiction.

I think Gary and Duke were both running from something and they saw that in each other. I don't think alcohol was what drew them together.

I think that the problems that they were encountering in life is what brought them together.
