They were kindred spirits. Both were outsiders, both had addictions, both had trouble finding love. I thought their friendship was the strong point of the book.

Both Gary and Duke are deserters of their various homes. They acknowledge this similarity and it brings them together and form a basis of their friendship.

They had similar things going on with them: they were both addicts and seemed to be running from something.
