This book had some flaws, side characters were not as fleshed out as they could have been and the writing felt a bit stilted but the topic was very interesting. Reading about other people's way of life is one of my favorite things so getting to read about the circus, sword swallowing, and how one kid gets to discover this different way of life it nice. Overall I enjoyed it and would give it a 2/4.

I enjoyed the book. In the beginning it drew me in with interest and kept my interest. Some wording confused the context of some sentences, but didn't stop the reading. Interesting short versions of the culture and those who live in it daily. Nothing surprised me because life is like that.

The lifestyle presented there is a tad wild for me, so my approach to the story was already lope-sided from the get-go. What I can say about it is that in the midst of all the wildness, drunkenness, drugs and the works, there is an over-arching theme that in life, choices have consequences. Another lesson to be gleaned is that no matter how nasty you life gets, you can always find a way to make it work for you, just like Duke found a way to make life go on in spite of his past follies.

I'm not sure I would recommend it for a read, but strictly due to my personal preferences. I know that those who love this sort of thrilling narratives would have a blast reading the book.

The book is amazing... and there is a lot to learn from it and that is why I would recommend it. One might think that because the main characters, Duke and Gary are not well educated, there is nothing much that they can offer, but that is proved wrong when one reads the book and understands it. For me, The Sword Swallower and the Chico Child was real inspiratinal.

A 3 out of 4 stars is a fair rating on the book. Yes, there is some exaggeration in the book.

I must admit the book cover page is attractive. It provides an insight of what to expect in the book.
