I think the book reflects the child abuse in her book. Things like the mean streak and wetting the bed are common in children, even on some adults. But those are some of the most noticeable ones, even things like nightmares are common and can be easily detected, but there are effects like jealousy that will not be noticeable unless in more specific situations.

The writer did an excellent job in showing how differently children can react to abuse. And different reactions are the reason why it's often difficult to identify when a child is abused or just particularly sensitive.

All of the emotional effects of abused children were clearly portrayed in the story, and I think Natalie cope up with the situation brave enough.

Natalie portrays a great effect of abuse in children. Effects mainly go with age though.
When it comes to directing the world to work with you, age doesn't matter, race doesn't matter, origin doesn't matter.

I have seen the adult repercussions of this kind of abuse, and the various responses are not surprising at all.

Absolutely! There are so many forms of abuse, who’s to say a one’s horrific experience is greater or less then anothers. Everyone handles their emotions and scars differently, however abuse has one common character- a lack of love from the perpetrator.

Tbunde5 wrote: 01 Apr 2018, 21:55 While Natalie is the central figure of the book, I found it fascinating to see the interactions of all the children. Robyn, who wets the bed; Shirley, who has a vicious mean streak; and Natalie, trying to hold them all together. Do you think the author gives an honest portrayal of the effects of abuse in children?
I do think the author has done well with this portrayal. Each person reacts differently, and this book shows several of the ways children cope and deal with such abuse and stress. The inclusion of these different reactions adds a lot to the book, in my opinion.

I did a research project on this once. When a child is emotionally or physically abused, they develop negative feelings they can either internalize or externalize. This puts the child at risk for a lot of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, as well as behavioral and societal problems.

Effects of child abuse are gross. Bedwetting is an indicator yes but it affects the confidence and self esteem of the child in the long run...
The author does justice to the major theme' Child abuse '...it's well portrayed.
It's such a great insight n an eye opener to the readers.

I like the fact that there is no generalization in the treatment. There is nuanced understanding involved and this is what a situation like this deserves.
