Natalie portrays strength of a woman. She protects her mother though she is still a child.

Consider a few things for me: does circumstance define the strength of a character? If it doesn't, what does? If it does, doesn't being resilient in the face of hardships qualify as strength?

Also, even if she wasn't a strong character in the prologue, does that really matter? One of the most compelling things for me when I read a new book is character development. The process of finding that strength and resilience will probably be a better story than her being an unchanging source of strength throughout the entire novel.

Just food for thought. :)
I agree with you. Finding her strength through the circumstances would have probably made a better story. In such way, teens who lacked strength initially would be encouraged more by her story.

I agree with you, Natalie always seemed to be a much stronger character than her mother ever was. It says a lot about a child that is willing to jump in the middle of their parents' fights.

Natalie finds little ways to survive the abuse. Hiding her favorite goat from Alex is a constant victory. Her romance fulfills her on a personal level, as those the encouragement of her artistic talent. She finds happiness amidst misery; that makes her strong.

Yes, staying in an unhappy home in the face of hardship portrays a woman of strong character who is willing to accept anything just to stay, fight for, comfort and share the sorrows of her family

It takes a really strong woman to be saddled with an unhappy home.

The prologue does convey strength of a woman in portraying an unhappy home. As someone who grew up in an emotionally abusive home, I think it takes great character to stay in a tough situation. The mother conveys strength is her willingness to endure the abuse for the sake of her children. Natalie shows great fortitude in standing up to her step-father and protecting her mother. I think both women show great strength in protecting one another and complementing what the other may lack.

Staying in an unhappy home is no proof of strong character. Action and behaviour are what makes one a strong character.

Since she is able to survive in that environment, I would say so (if you are talking about Natalie that is)

I really admired how this young girl offers to help her mother at such a tender age
