I don't know about the label - but I do think that female readers will be able to relate more to the characters, and hence enjoy reading this book more than male readers, because male characters are hardly featured.

bookowlie wrote: 23 Feb 2018, 14:48 I agree this book could be considered chick lit or the more modern term, "women's contemporary fiction." :) The main characters are a bunch of female friends and have girls-only get-togethers that are usually very light-hearted. I can see why an author might not want to market a book as chick lit since the genre is not usually taken seriously. Many readers look down on chick lit and don't want to read a book if it's labelled as such.
Great point!! I totally agree with you.

I don't think this bool is chick lit. Yes, it was based on four women, but the book theme extends to friendship and fly fishing which everyone can learn from.

I definitely think this book is very oriented towards a female target reader, so if that's your definition of Chick Lit, then absolutely. It doesn't mean that men wouldn't enjoy it, it's just that female bonding was at the core of it.

The book being "Chick-lit" should not even be a issue. Chick-lit or not, it's a good novel.

This book contains both male and female characters, the reader's interpretation of the book will depend on how they felt about it. To some, it might be chick-lit while to some it might not be.

I don't think that the book is a chick lit because if the main characters were all guys there would not be an issue. I like that the book is delving into the lives of four young women. I agree that the book does hit many of those themes, but every book deals with some aspects of relationships.

I think this is rather subjective and from the reader's perspective. It does not matter what description or labelling is given. It turned out to be a good book about women bonding and being adventurous. It strikes a great reminder in me as I also read the "Man Mission" a book by Eytan Uliel. The book is about 4 men who bonded and had annual adventures without their partners. So many similarities. If the Reel Sisters is considered Chick Lit, then how do we the man Mission... Lad lit?

Why do we presume that only men will read books with male protagonists yet we don't do the same for books with female protagonists? I suppose that the stereotype that male characters are the norm still exists.
