If the theme of bravery is a recurring theme, then, wouldn't the themes of cowardice and fear be recurring too?

I'd say bildungsroman, or a coming of age story was prominent as well. These themes work well since it's structured for the protagonist to learn and develop as the plot unfolds. The problem is when the author shows the character having learned a skill or lesson early on, and the character becomes almost a "Mary Sue" where they can do no wrong. But this book pulls it off, well.

The different nations and the battling reminded me of World War II with the Allies and the Axis.

Honestly, the reader already knows what to expect by reading the title "End of the Last Great Kingdom" and it's quite easy to identify the main themes, such as bravery, love, friendship and most importantly - finding inner strength.

Bravery, faith, trust, love, betrayal. There are many themes in the book that I really liked. The author manages to portray them well.
