Both of the books are of the same genre. So it is obvious that some readers will find similarities at one point or the other. Maybe the author was inspired by the book. Maybe he was not. But for me, End of The Last Great Kingdom is :handgestures-thumbupright:

I can always easily relate a fantasy book with another. And I found quite a lot of things similar in this two books. from magic to battles to romance. But the two books are very different and not comparable to each other in spite of the similarities, they are both unique in many ways.

Since the two books are of the same genre, you're bound to find some thematic similarities.

I'm siding with a lot of others who believe the books are similar, but uniquely different. I understand your view point, though. I, too, have read some fantasy novels which include the use of magic and had Harry Potter in mind. With the HP series being as big as it is, it's almost compulsory to compare it to anything magic related and find similarities.

I think the similarities stop at the magic and the genre. Each book has a set of characters that come alive in totally different ways.

I too find this book trying to imitate Harry Potter but it is nowhere close to it in quality.

I did feel it was similar but unique in its own way. I got a Harry Potter meets Divergent theme. It's similar to Harry Potter with the ages, magic, and Brimstone’s backstory. The reminders of Divergent are the distinct classifications and trial. As in Divergent, there are certain factions or classifications that hold their own distinction and benefits. The school vibe, training, and roles the characters take on are very much like Harry Potter. I didn't find it too similar though. Although this is the first book in the series, I assume the author will try to go in a similar direction as J.K. Rowling and turn the books into famous novels.

I think that this book was more similar to Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind than the Harry Potter series; but there are plenty of things that distinguish it from both Rothfuss' work and from J.K. Rowlings, as well.

In reading this book, I noted a few similarities, mainly stemming from the popular idea of a magical school. However, I found the mechanics of the magic system and whole magical world to be distinct from the popular Harry Potter series.
