There are too many scenes which take away from where the story was originally going. I really liked the beginning where it was focusing on her survival and meeting others. I started to find myself skipping ahead when the sex started because it was so often once it started.

I feel that this so frequently happens in books and it is infuriating!

I'm wondering though, what the author's goal was with all of the sex scenes? I mean, is Levin really just the guy who thinks sex sells or was the emphasis on the sex more a part of his character development? Maybe he wanted it to seem like the sex was important?

My theory about this book is that he had a collection of drafts on different subjects. One was travel writing, one was erotica and one was science fiction material about time travel. Then he put them all together into one book.
This post was brought to you by the word "specifically".

This comment has made me reconsider all books that have heavy sex scenes. I will definitely keep this in mind when I read other books

I'm undecided when it comes to the sex scenes. Half of me thinks that if this was a purely contemporary romance novel the scenes would have been suitable. The other half thinks the sex scenes should be completely kicked out, save for maybe one or two, and the plot left to focus on the heavy issues

It didn't feel good going into the reading with a scientific expectations only to bump into multiple unnecessary sex scenes. I feel like a sex hungry girl hijacked the plot.

I feel that this book is more about a woman who seems to be taking the world on her own terms, the sexuality, the struggle, and everything else. She devised her own style of leadership or initiative, not feeling any qualms to deceive or lie just to achieve her purpose.

Can't agree more. Sometimes I had to skip over the pages, because there are too many explicit scenes and I definitely wasn't that interested, haha.

The sex scenes were too much and I actually tried skipping most of them.

I find it too often in the books where the writer trades romance for sex! And this is exactly what happens, the characters seem less involved emotionally, the chemistry seems buried in the ground. And when it comes to their libido, they just seem to have too much of it.

I believe the overarching theme here was supposed to be science fiction. For relief, the author may have sort these scenes to liven things up. They were quite excessive though.

I wonder if similar books, with a lusty male protagonist, receive similar questions about the quantity of sex? That is: is the concern here only about the ratio of sex to plot, or is it about female sexual agency?

It just like a female version of a James Bond. Though its a sci-fiction. The character called for a mission. To save the world. But just the same, no movies of James Bond that doesn't have sex scene. Though wholesome. It just like, no movie can stand without it. I don't know.

I haven’t finished the book yet, but so far, I think all the sex scenes distract from the rest of the book.
