Was it too risky for Jennifer to donate blood to Jose?

Post by Christina Rose »

When Jose was in need of a blood transfusion, Jennifer devised a plan to "test" her blood, as well as the blood samples taken from the others, to determine if any of them were a match to Jose's blood type. Knowing that her blood could save Jose, Jennifer drew three pints, which left her feeling extremely weak.

I personally think this was the right thing for Jennifer to do at the time. Do you feel like it was too risky, or even irrational? If you were in her shoes, would you have done the same to possibly save a life?

I thought it was the right call because she was so smart while doing it. In addition, they did not have the technology to understand her blood. The only thing that was worrisome was that they might notice something was unusual about her because donating three pints is a lot.

I completely agree. She was pretty quick on her feet, too. She didn't give anyone the chance to stop her.

I agree that it was the right thing to do but the amount she was able to donate was suspicious. I also found it odd that nobody ever asked her to show them exactly how she did the test. Being that it's a group of scientists and research students, I would think that's something they would want to know just for curiosity's sake.

The amount was suspicious. It would have made more sense to draw maybe two pints to be sure Jose was safe to make it to the hospital.
I agree that it's odd nobody was curious to learn how to test the blood samples. I would have probably jumped up to watch during the process.

It's possible that they were all too stunned to think straight.

I definitely agree it was the right thing at the time. Outside looking in, the act was just pretty risky.

I still wonder if keeping Jose alive changed the future in any way. I don't think enough thought was given to this line of the story. Maybe he addresses it in future books, but it seemed like bad choice at the time to me.

It was reckless on her part for extracting more pints however noble.

I would do it if I was unaware of the problems that I could face later. If I have the understanding or knowledge of the issues that I may face, then I would have thought twice.

It is too risky for her to denote three pints, it is too much.

I think it was risky not just to donate three pints, but because the two come form different time periods, her blood could have caused some kind of harm to Jose.

The risk from drawing too much blood, while real, is much less of a risk to me than letting someone die when I could possibly save them. I think she made the right call since there was not a great deal of hope for Jose otherwise
