What if you were Tom?

I've been reflecting on what happened that morning. Tom's ex-wife walks up to him and introduces some frail-looking girl as his granddaughter as they were getting ready for that special trip. If you were Tom, what would you do?

For me, I would react differently than Tom did. I would probably pick up some quarrel with Ruth arguing about the girls origin, or maybe I would reject the girl outrightly. Hmmm... I'm still thinking of what I would have done if I had been Tom. Tell me your reaction.

I would be shocked first and then in complete denial.

After that, I feel guilty for what my daughter must have gone through because I didn't try hard enough to be a part of her life.

I would have supported daughter.. while its difficult to imagine as I am too young for this.

We are old enough to understand situations.

Yes, at Tom's age. He was able to figure out the situation pretty quickly

So age and experience has played an important role here. Well said!

if I were tom, based on what I passed through with my daughter, I could not allow Ruth to denial Sarah's responsibility in the first place as she was the only one who managed to keep the secret behind my back

I would imagine that, once I got over the shock, I'd take care of my grandchild! The innate love a grandparent towards a grandchild would likely come quickly. I would hope to spend as much time with her as possible, getting to know her, taking care of her, etc.

this time around I would be glad in the end that I have some one who will call me grandpa .hopefully she will be there for me when I get much order because that will be the time I will need much help from other people. To Ruth I would just say thank you for disclosing your inner most secret and that through my grand daughter I am able to see her mum in her

To put it simply, I believe each person crossing your life conveys some sort of important message denying them would be rejecting your destiny, well, some sort of thing like that. No matter the struggle, each encounter is meaningful and is destined to happen. Even if you we reject it, it might find its way back to us in the most unpleasant way. At least that's what I've learned from my life and if I were Tom, I would do the same. I would accept Sarah not because she might be a family, but because she might be an opportunity given by life.

Tom and Ruth were not friends but were apparently civil to one another. I suppose Tom trusted her not to lie about something (someone, in fact) as important as a grandchild. Tom also immediately saw Sarah's resemblance to Becky.

In the Philippines, couples with newly married children eagerly await their first grandchild (called apo in Filipino). When the apos do come, the grandparents usually spoil their apos and become doting lolos and lolas (gramps and grannies). So, if I were Tom, I would most probably welcome the apo with open arms.
