According to me, they are very important for the story. They play some important role in influencing the actions of Tom and Sarah. Myra and William always supported Sarah, which gave her strength. They provide a depth to the novel.

I tend to agree. Actions by William and Myra actually kept the story moving forward. It seems that most major decisions were made by one of these characters.
