I sympathize with her, to face the life she has at such a young age is difficult.A grandfather she is meeting for the first time is her guardian.

I can only imagine how difficult a situation like that would be. But, I also don't think it makes anything easier to immediately approach any new situation or person with such animosity.

I agree with others here, though she had a more difficult upbringing, I did not like her and her rudeness shouldn't be excused because of her background. As the story progressed, she did become more likable.

Her circumstances definitely played a role in making me soften up to her a little.

The typical teenage, hot blodded, tantrum throwing, full of raging hormones fuelled perhaps by her family background, she is an orphan who was almost raped twice by family members

When you are coming from the recent past Sarah brought with her, one is typically going to be on the defensive as defensive mechanisms are often a matter of survival, either emotional or physical.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

A little mixed. She was certainly being a brat. I thought she was too mouthy and unappreciative, but then as I learned more about her background, it was easy to see she used her rudeness as a defense mechanism.

I didn't really like her at first although I did think differently about her toward the end. After you get to know her and her story better, she is much more likeable.

My early impression was that she had a bad family history and a lot of bad things had happened to her and around her. This caused her to be cautious around people. Being a brat and obnoxious is something that comes naturally to many teenagers.

I was just about to post this! I hated her. Thought she thought the world revolved around her, and she lacked the ability to think outside of the box. But like Ashley said, she most definitely made a 360 degree, and show the most character development throughout the novel.
Between the pages of a book is a lovely place to be...

She did show a lot of development. I guess she just needed to see there were people out there willing to stay a part of her life without trying to hurt her in any way.

I thought she was rude, badly behaved and very unpleasant. I couldn't believe she was being so rude to the people who would provide her with shelter and clothing.
She did show more depth when she seemed to care about what happens with the atlatl and wants to respect her grandfather's wishes.
After her adventure, she was a lot more likable.

Compared to her evolution into a strong hearted person, she was very weak and ignorable in the beginning just like everyone. We learn from our experiences and eventually grow strong.

We definitely see that with Sarah that the experiences made her stronger.
