She grew on me, but from beginning to end, she does not remotely feel like a 12 year old.

There was nothing to like about Sarah at the beginning of the book. You felt sorry for her predicament, and as the story unfolded you grew to like her.

Sarah! Poor and abandoned with no one fully responsible of her. She attracted my sympathy. But to me, she was a bit manner less especially in her reaction of elders. He situation doesn't warrant her to be arrogant and just throw words to seniors. In fact, she should have humbled herself so as to win the trust of her caretakers.

I agree she should not have been so arrogant.

If you mean she seems older, I agree. I'm sure that's because of all she's been through.

She was very strong and capable. Those attributes came in handy on more than one occasion.

At first, I felt bad for her. How can kids not be cynical when all the adults in their life let them down? She was dumped off at Grandmpa's and his first response was that he didn't want her either! As the story progressed, I began to admire her courage and strength. Sarah refused to let men take advantage of her. She went back to recover the atlatl. She made every effort to help her Grandpa fulfill his promise.

Sarah was the usual teen in the beginning, grumbling and making rude comments. But I thought she showed real maturity in the scenes where she is with the boat people. She is not scared, she just plays along as if she is one of them. Sarah's practical attitude to life is commendable. Her wit also helps her overcome the challenges as she names the people ' Weeps a lot, Weeps a lot more'.

I feel Sarah is someone who was once much exposed to nature walk/visiting places because she once said her parents used to send her to several places .So going with her grandpa to peninsula was something she already knew how the place will be like and the challenges she was going to encounter

Well given that she was a young troubled teen it is hard to figure out what kind of a person Sarah is. She herself could have had trouble trusting anyone therefore leading her to the way she acted. In the end she surprised me by having a kind heart and wanting Tom and Myra to go back into the forest with her.

I felt she was awkward and a difficult teen. I however did understand her when she complained of the place being like "the end of the world". It must have been very difficult for her accepting that she will live in a house without a television, I mean, she's a child. But overall, Sarah for me was very difficult and sometimes unreasonable.

I pitied Sara at the beginning of the story. She must have felt alone, unwanted and miserable. I didn't agree with her criticism towards Tom, but understood it.

It took me a while to warm up to Sarah, but this gradually changed as the novel progressed.

I always knew there was something likable in this character.

Yea I agree. She became more likeable as the story went on.

I agree with you except, for some reason, I never grew to like her character.
