Panama Canal

Post by Donnavila Marie01 »

The society of American Civil Engineers considers the Panama Canal as one of the 7 modern wonders. Have you been to Panama Canal or passed through it? or if not, have you been to a place which you consider as a place of wonder?

I have not been to the Panama Canal. I don't think it's really on my "bucket list." I'd much rather go to Europe, see the castles in Scotland, or Venice. That's just me though.

I've never been to the Panama canal. It sounds interesting though. I wouldn't mind seeing it one day.

I have never been to the Panama Canal, but after reading David McCullough's The Path Between the Seas years ago, I decided I want to see it. So much interesting history!

Nah, I haven't been. But it sounds amazing! But I have been to places that seem like an architectural wonder, and then I think about how such places are not built anymore.

I haven't been through the Panama Canal, although I think it would be fun to get the chance to do so. I worked in Manhattan for several years and always thought the view from the skyscrapers were a modern wonder.

I've been in The Panama Canal, of course! Since I'm Panamanian, it was easy for me. I couldn't take a tour in elementary school, but when I finished high school, I decided to go by myself. I had the chance to admire the canal up close and I transited through the locks alongside the big ships. I could see the tugboats in operation too. It was an amazing experience. You can sense when the water is filling the locks and the cruise is going up. It was like when you are going up a roller coaster only that slower. However, I would like to visit it again to see the new set of locks.

I can see why the ACE would consider the Panama Canal a modern wonder. I do not have a strong desire to see it or go through it but would do it given the opportunity. I'm not one to pass on experiences, when it's possible to do them.

Personally, I find sitting on a beach in the Cayman Islands, staring at the horizon, a pretty wondrous thing. As for man-made wonders, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Washington Monument are both pretty wondrous to the eye, especially when you think about what went into creating them.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

I've been at the canal, in 2011. I visited as a troop of engineers from my country. Got to see also the Suez canal in Egypt and partly the intended design for the Nicaraguan canal.

I could sense unusual sensitivity in these locations. Pretty nice pieces of human engineering but too political as well.

I agree 100%. I've been to England and Ireland, and I found the history there just amazing. Plus, my ancestry goes back throughout Europe. I'd rather go there.

If given the chance, why not? The world has so many beautiful places; a lifetime isn't enough to see them all.

I have not been there, nor have I considered it as a specific destination... perhaps something to look into. I didn't realize others considered it something worth seeing.
